It would be a good idea if you purchased a good book on cats.  I would like to suggest, “Cat Owners Home Veterinary Handbook, by Delbert G. Carlson, D.V.M & James M. Griffin, M.D. This book is an excellent source on cat behaviors and illnesses. Subscribing to cat magazines are another great source. Always consult with your Veterinarian before you give any medications to your cat.  There are many human medications that are deadly for cats to take.

                       72 Hour Disaster Kit

We can’t prevent disasters or accidents but we can be prepared.  Remember, if it is not safe for you, it is not safe for your animals. Whether you live in areas where tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, frequent thunderstorms, etc. occur, you should be prepared and have an evacuation plan.

Sit down with your family at least once a month and discuss your plans with your family. You plans should include all possible disaster scenarios including the above plus things like fire, floods or even a house break in.

Keep your pets disaster kit along with your family’s emergency supplies.

Your Pet disaster kit should include:

** Collar with ID tag, city license tag and rabies tag (should be on pet).
** Current shots and health record (keep in watertight container).
** Current photo.
** Food and water bowls.
** Enough food and water for three days (keep food in watertight container).
** Pet carrier with bedding.
** Plastic bags to dispose of pet waste.
** Leash
** Medications
** Toys
** Manual can opener.
** First Aid Kit (above).
** Grooming supplies
** Paper towels, wet wipes.
** Flashlights and extra batteries.
** Cat litter and litter box.

There are many hotel/motels that now accept pets.  To find one of these check out www.petswelcome.com or www.takeyourpet.com.

Remember, planning ahead is the best protection for you and your family in case of disasters.
